Live in Presque Isle
Today, our Village is home to 700 year-round and over 2,500 seasonal residents, alongside a strong sense of community. Many small businesses and individuals work hard in order to be able to call Presque Isle their home, raising families here and taking advantage of the safe educational environment we are blessed with, as well as an amazing quality of life due in large part to our incredible surroundings and the people that live, work, and play here. In addition, we are finding that families and working people are spending more and more time at their up north places, as it is becoming increasingly possible to work from your home, with improved broadband coming to Presque Isle by the end of 2016.
Broadband has gone from being a luxury to a necessity for full participation in our economy and society. To this end, Vilas County's western towns applied for and were recipients of Connect America federal funding. Fiber optics are now along all major roads and this means at a minimum, all residences will have access to 10/1 Mbps fixed broadband, with some along the primary lines closer to 100/1 Mbps fixed broadband. This is WONDERFUL news for home-based businesses and remote working individuals. There are more steps to take, but this grant funding puts Presque Isle a step closer to where we need to be moving forward.
North Lakeland School is a PK-8 school that serves the communities of Presque Isle, Winchester, Manitowsh Waters, and Boulder Junction. It is an EXCELLENT rural school, with a strong and unique outdoor education program that includes mentored hunting, and a proactive administration and board that works hard to bring cutting-edge opportunities every year. This year, the school entered into a 5-year program with Discovery Education, a wonderful program that accelerates districts' digital transition through comprehensive standards-based content, regularly updated and interactive e-textbooks, professional development, an emphasis on formative assessment, and community engagement proven to positively impact student achievement. In addition, youth sports are strong with NLS boasting the only all-outdoor hockey club in the State.
NLS feeds into Lakeland Union High School, along with three other elementary schools. It has a growing reputation as a leader in students graduating and appropriately finding their way to 4-year, 2-year, and technical colleges via its college-readiness, emphasis on AP classes, connections to area technical colleges and apprenticeships, and more.
There is always something to do or to get involved with in Presque Isle! Recent initiatives started up by volunteers in our community, and supported by our Town, include: lights for our ball park, community gardens, an expanded Pipke Park Trail system, and a Little Free Library program. There is work being down on the development of a paved, off-road bike trail that will connect to the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail, efforts at downtown revitalization, the establishment of a public beach, and much more!
