Big Lake is a scenic lake that has an interesting murder mystery in its history. The 1920’s brought people from diverse walks of life. There were several summer estates, and some small cabins for summer rentals. Those who lived year round on the lake were caretakers for the wealthy estates, hunting and fishing guides, trappers, and some were moonshiners. One winter night, guide and moonshiner, Mr. Powers, was killed. Was it murder? Was it self-defense? Join Kay Krans, retired history teacher and Manitowish Waters Historical Society (MWHS) member along with a Discovery Center Naturalist from the North Lakeland Discovery Center, as we tour by canoe the important sites of this story. Pack binoculars, water, and bug repellent. Participants will need to drive themselves to the start location of the trip (directions will be emailed prior to the trip). Do not come if you have had illness within 14 days of event (you will be able to receive a refund). NLDC reserves the right to cancel/refund if case levels significantly change and the program is deemed unsafe. Register by August 27.
