Live in Presque Isle
Live in Presque Isle
Today, our Village is home to 700 year-round and over 2,500 seasonal residents, alongside a strong sense of community. Many small businesses and individuals work hard in order to be able to call Presque Isle their home, raising families here and taking advantage of the safe educational environment we are blessed with, as well as an amazing quality of life due in large part to our incredible surroundings and the people that live, work, and play here. In addition, we are finding that families and working people are spending more and more time at their up north places, as it is becoming increasingly possible to work from your home, with improved broadband coming to Presque Isle by 2019.
Broadband
Broadband has gone from being a luxury to a necessity for full participation in our economy and society. To this end, Vilas County's western towns applied for and were recipients of Connect America federal funding. Fiber optics are now along all major roads and this means at a minimum, all residences will have access to 10/1 Mbps fixed broadband, with some along the primary lines closer to 100/1 Mbps fixed broadband. This is WONDERFUL news for home-based businesses and remote working individuals. There are more steps to take, but this grant funding puts Presque Isle a step closer to where we need to be moving forward.
Schools
North Lakeland School (NLS) was established in 1970 as a consolidation of several smaller community schools. Nestled deep in a beautiful woodland setting, surrounded by numerous lakes and streams, NLS has a special charm. The five townships that NLS serves -- Boulder Junction, part of Land O’Lakes, Manitowish Waters, Presque Isle, and Winchester -- comprise the largest geographic elementary school district in the State of Wisconsin.
NLS is a 4K through 8th grade school known for its excellent academic programs, a low ratio of students to staff, unique outdoor education program, and innovative use of class configuration and technology. The school prides itself on the quality of care given to each student and upholds a tradition of creating competent and responsible citizens who will become tomorrow’s leaders. Our buck behaviors are: Safe, Kind, Respectful, Responsible, and Attentive.
NLS feeds into Lakeland Union High School, along with three other elementary schools. It has a growing reputation as a leader in students graduating and appropriately finding their way to 4-year, 2-year, and technical colleges via its college-readiness, emphasis on AP classes, connections to area technical colleges and apprenticeships, and more.
Community
There is always something to do or to get involved with in Presque Isle! Recent initiatives started up by volunteers in our community, and supported by our Town, include: lights for our ball park, community gardens, an expanded Pipke Park Trail system, and a Little Free Library program. There is work being down on the development of a paved, off-road bike trail that will connect to the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail, efforts at downtown revitalization, the establishment of a public beach, and much more!
